Spring has sprung

Today is March 9th already!   Where does the time go?  It seems the older I get the faster the time flies.  It's frightening!!!  Our flowers started sprouting up by the end of February and our tree buds started bursting then as well!  Crazy!

Today I have been finishing up an Easter pillow I will be selling in my etsy shop.

I am also thinking about a pastel monogram that could be not just for Easter, but for the whole Spring season.  We'll see.  The reason I painted this bird like an ordinary every day bird is because Jesus is the star of the show.  We are all ordinary to each other but only in Jesus' eyes to we become extraordinary.  With Him we become who He created us to be.  Without him, we are just ordinary like this bird.  Perhaps I will paint some that are more fancy, again, we will see.

In my last post here, I mentioned my sisters from another mother.  I had coffee with them last Friday and one of them made a remark about when I was going to paint the shutters I have promised her????  I want to thank Lisa because I started on that project asap!  The front is Santa Claus and the reverse will be a witch.  This will give her more bang for her buck!!  Two holidays for the price of one!  So between this and wanting to begin another painting project (memory boxes for babies) I am pulling back a wee bit on the pillow making.  I finally found the right brushes to make painting these pillows easier!  Praise God!   I don't know how I ever managed to paint so many covers with such soft bristles!

I don't know if anyone ever reads this, probably not because when I tried to find it to write a post, it said it had been deleted!  LOL!  With a bit of searching, I found it!

Thank you to whoever is reading this and God Bless you!

Learning a skill

Hello!  Lately I have been learning a new skill......the Cricut Explore Air.  If you have been following me (which I would love it if you would!) you know I have painted just about anything that stays still!  Lately, it has been pillow covers/cases/shams.  Painting a picture of the upcoming holiday is where it all started.  In my Etsy shop I have painted quite a few holiday themed cases.

I have sisters from another mother who have purchased just about every pillow case I have ever made!!  They are the ones responsible for the St. Patrick's day designs!  A few weeks ago one of the sisters asked me to paint a "one liner" that my mother-in-law, Annette, always says when a person comes to your party with a chip on their shoulder cause they really would rather be somewhere else.  This line comes in handy also when you are awaiting responses from   an invite to a party you are hosting.  I come from a large family as do my sisters from another mother and this saying makes you feel better.   I no longer get upset when people don't come to my parties.
As a matter of fact, this lovely saying puts everything in perspective.  Because really, who wants a party guest who is going to be smug and pouty?!  Not me and apparently not my "sisters"!
So with all this said, I needed to be able to write on the pillow and have it look "professional".  This is no easy feat, especially when painting on a drop cloth!  My brain went into overdrive and I asked my daughter, Shannon (who is my techie) to teach me how to use her Cricut Explore Air machine that she uses for card making.  I thought I'd just make my own stencil and there you go!  Well, it was not that simple.  The hard part was finding a font that would cut easily and leave me with a perfectly made stencil.  It took me over a week to get to this point!  The original font I originally chose had a cross stitched look - every time I would get all the cut marks marked, the system would drop me and I would need to begin again.
I felt very discouraged but knew if I kept trying I would find a font that didn't drop all the circles in the o's, d's, f's, etc.  Are you following my thought pattern?  Anyway......Here is the finished product!  The font is bird feet in the letter.  I thought of putting birds on a telephone wire inferring this is their conversation......perhaps I will - as each design is original and varied.
This is the front and on the back is the golden tan fabric which has a pocket to slip your current 18x18 pillow into!  Because these pillow cases are interchangeable, it makes for much less storage space!   I'd love to hear your thoughts!
God Bless you,

I'd love for you to follow me on my Painted on a Whim Facebook page!

Today has been very exciting for me in the "tech" world!  My daughter, Shannon, has agreed to help me connect my FB and my Etsy shop along with my blog!  I'm only 52 but my mind/brain just doesn't work like that anymore!  My other daughter, Mary, will be (hopefully) taking my pictures in the near future as opposed to me and my phone!  This is all so new and exciting for me.  I just hope that my part in the whole thing doesn't burn out!

Lately I have been painting on drop cloth cut in to squares for pillow cases.  I bet you didn't know that all drop cloths are not made the same!  Every time I buy a new one, it is a different fabric/weave/texture than the previous one.  Painting on these is fun yet frustrating because the paint is sucked right into the fabric.  The remedy for this is to water down your paint, however, this leads to bleeding (the lines are already not crisp and straight) which makes for a frustrating day.  Some times it works, some times it doesn't. are a few pictures of what I have been working on these past few days:

I have been working on perfecting the whole bike scene; borders or no borders...captions or no captions... any input from you?  Please feel free to write a comment in the box below!

With wedding season fast approaching, I thought this would make a great gift for the new bride (at her shower or whatever).  The license plate is where the date of the wedding would go.

this poor bunny is bottom heavy, could it be from having those babies?

Either way, all are still works in progress- the thought process and working it out takes the longest, once that is done, then the fun part begins!

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week!  God Bless you :)

New Year, New Name, Same Blog

Hello!  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I have been away from my blog for just a little over a year.  During that time I have toyed with the idea of giving it up completely or changing my attitude about the whole blogging experience.  I have decided on option number 2.  I am still happy hands at home and a DIYer, but my main focus is on painting, hence the new name of the blog.  Painted on a Whim best describes my style.  When I get the urge to paint, I paint a lot.  Lately, I have been painting pillow covers.  I usually paint to sell, why I do not know.  I have been selling to my instagram and FB friends but thought it best to get serious now that I have more time for me in my life.  A few of my kids moved out and I have adopted one bedroom for my painting and the other for sewing.  I'm hoping to one day merge these two rooms into one.
But, I am not looking to get rid of #6 anytime soon!  Below are some of the Valentine pillows I have designed, sewn and paionted for my new Etsy shop called PaintedOnAWhim, if you have a moment, please check it out!

Each of these pillow covers have been hand painted and sewn to fit specific pillow forms.  It is amazing what you can do with a drop cloth!

Next I will be working on Easter and Mothers Day.

God Bless you
